Summer Program

Every summer ten to fifteen second-year law students have the opportunity to do challenging work in the various practice areas at Curtis, Mallet-Prevost, Colt & Mosle LLP, one of New York’s oldest law firms.

Curtis’ Summer Associate Program, which generally lasts ten weeks, is designed to provide a realistic view of the practice of law in a supportive environment. During the first five weeks of the program, Summer Associates are given the opportunity to experience work in all of the Firm’s five departments—International Corporate, Litigation, Tax, Trusts and Estates and Bankruptcy and Creditors’ Rights—and each Summer Associate works closely with an assigned partner and associate on each group’s most active matters. At the Summer Associate’s mid-summer review, he or she will be given the opportunity to choose to work solely on matters in the department in which he or she eventually wishes to practice.

Summer Associates are given work assignments that reflect their interests and objectives and relate to ongoing client matters. They receive formal and informal training throughout the summer and are given the opportunity to join lawyers in meetings, closings, depositions and court proceedings. Curtis’ Summer Associate Program allows students not only to strengthen their lawyering abilities, but also to build professional relationships with both colleagues and clients.

The social life of Summer Associates is always active. The calendar of events includes departmental dinners and informal gatherings at partners’ homes as well as other outings, such as concerts in Central Park and Yankees games. The Firm’s weekly breakfast meetings allow Summer Associates to discuss with one another and with members of the Summer Associate Committee the assignments they have worked on during the week.

Each Summer Associate receives a formal review at the mid-point and at the conclusion of the Summer Associate Program. Hiring decisions are based on a number of criteria, including work products and evaluations, mid-summer and end-of-summer reviews and overall capability.
