Jennifer Ryan Receives Pro Bono Award from The Legal Aid Society

New York, November 23, 2011- Jennifer L. Ryan, associate at Curtis, Mallet-Prevost, Colt & Mosle LLP, has been honored by The Legal Aid Society with a Pro Bono Publico Award for outstanding service to The Legal Aid Society and its clients.

The awards were presented by the Chief Judge of the State of New York, The Honorable Jonathan Lippman, at a ceremony on November 9 in New York.

The Society annually recognizes the outstanding work of volunteer lawyers, law firms, corporations and other professionals who participate in the Society's Pro Bono Program by providing exceptional legal services to low-income New Yorkers.

Ms. Ryan earned the award for her work with The Legal Aid Society's Education Advocacy Project. In particular, she worked with the Department of Education for a year-and-a-half to ensure that a 5-year old girl with special needs received the education to which she was legally entitled. The girl, an orphan who was shuffled to and from multiple foster homes, had no one to ensure that she received the education she needs. Ms. Ryan advocated for the child's educational rights, working with her various foster mothers, the New York State Board of Education and other state agencies to enable the child to get placed in a school and receive the education necessary to meet the child's needs.

The Legal Aid Society is a private, not-for-profit legal services organization, the oldest and largest in the nation, dedicated since 1876 to providing quality legal representation to low-income New Yorkers.
