For students pursuing a career in law, New York City is the best place to be. Curtis, strategically located in midtown Manhattan steps from Grand Central Station, offers law students from around the world a unique vantage point on the practice of law. The Summer Program at Curtis introduces law students to our innovative nature of practice, entrepreneurial spirit and supportive work environment.
The Curtis Summer Program is small and highly selective. Curtis chooses approximately 10 to 15 second-year law students to participate in our highly rated program. Grades and scores are not the only criteria for selection. Curtis looks for students who are confident, independent thinkers as well as multilingual. We immerse our summer associates in law firm life through client projects, training seminars and social events. The summer program is designed to give students a realistic view of the practice of law while at the same time teaching them real-world lawyering skills in a hands-on environment. Our summer associates quickly become assimilated through close contact with partners and mentors and involvement in important client work.
Summer associates receive assignments carefully selected to reflect their interests and goals. Throughout the summer, participants join our attorneys in meetings, closings, depositions and court proceedings. Formal training includes lectures, workshops, panel discussions and lunchtime programs on topics such as legal writing, corporate negotiation, discovery, depositions and trial practice. In addition, each summer associate is matched with a partner mentor and an associate adviser who are available to talk about firm culture, clients, work assignments and work/life balance. Weekly breakfast meetings provide a forum for discussing assignments with members of the summer associate committee and with peers.
Curtis summer associates also have numerous opportunities to become acquainted with New York and our lawyers outside of working hours. The busy calendar of events includes dinners and informal gatherings at private and public events throughout the metropolitan area, taking advantage of all that New York City has to offer.
Feedback is a central component of the learning process at Curtis. Summer associates receive thoughtful comments on their work in real time. In addition, each summer associate receives a review at the midpoint and end of the program, enabling the summer associate to develop a realistic sense of his or her performance. At the end of the summer, offers of employment are made based on criteria such as work product and evaluations, reviews and overall capability.
