At Curtis, our strong international focus enhances our practice and culture by bringing truly divergent views and experiences to the firm. In that spirit, for many years we have had a program especially designed for international LL.M. students. This is a unique opportunity for international LL.M. students to become acquainted with our singular way of practicing law, in addition to becoming acquainted with New York City, one of the most exciting cities in the world.
The program is small and highly selective. We typically hire foreign associates for the period of time ending with the expiration of their practical training employment authorization. In evaluating candidates, we take into account academic performance, work experience, language ability, licensing in foreign jurisdictions and experience in areas of law relevant to our practice. Foreign associates also come to the New York office from our international offices or through relationships Curtis has with international local law firms, companies and governmental entities. Foreign associates are responsible for applicable visa requirements and, where appropriate, the firm will provide necessary support to facilitate employment authorization on a case-by-case basis.
Most of our foreign associates join the Corporate department. Our goal is to provide our international associates with practical training, while in turn making use of their particular skills through carefully selected assignments.
We review the performance of our LL.M. associates using the same criteria by which we evaluate our other associates. We provide individual feedback both informally and formally through a midterm and end-of-term performance review. In most cases, foreign associates return to their country at the end of the originally scheduled period, although in some instances we will extend the period of employment or offer employment on a long-term basis, with assignment to an appropriate class.
