Jacques Semmelman, a partner in the Litigation group, combines the courtroom skills and trial experience of a former Assistant U.S. Attorney with a strong scientific background that includes a Ph.D. from Harvard University's Division of Applied Sciences. Mr. Semmelman's training and experience make him especially qualified to handle litigation involving complex scientific and engineering issues.

Mr. Semmelman obtained his B.S. degree from Columbia University's School of Engineering and Applied Science, where he was elected to Tau Beta Pi, the national engineering honor society. He then obtained a master's degree in mathematics from Harvard University. For his Ph.D. in applied mathematics at Harvard, he wrote a doctoral thesis on the partial differential equations of fluid dynamics with non-standard boundary conditions. He received his law degree, with honors, from Harvard Law School.

Mr. Semmelman joined Curtis as an associate in 1983. From 1987 to 1990, he was an Assistant U.S. Attorney, Criminal Division, in the Eastern District of New York. Mr. Semmelman has served as lead counsel in more than two dozen trials and major evidentiary hearings before juries, judges and arbitral panels. He has extensive experience in all phases of civil and criminal litigation and arbitration, as well as in the defense of government investigations and enforcement proceedings.

In the area of intellectual property litigation, Mr. Semmelman has experience in pharmaceutical patent and regulatory (Hatch-Waxman) litigation, as well as in U.S. International Trade Commission litigation involving microchip technology and finite element analysis. His intellectual property practice also encompasses Lanham Act litigation, including cases involving trademark infringement, trade dress infringement and false advertising.

Mr. Semmelman also has achieved recognition in the area of international extradition. He has lectured and published extensively in this area, and his law review articles have been cited by courts and by other commentators. He has been involved as counsel or co-counsel in several high-profile extradition cases.
