Mexico City-based Partner, Kate Brown de Vejar, specializes in international commercial and investment arbitration.  An Australian national, she is fluent in Spanish and French, in addition to her native English.

Ms Brown de Vejar has represented private corporations, sovereign states, and state-owned entities in connection with international arbitrations under the leading institutional and ad hoc arbitration rules, including those of the International Centre for Settlement of Investment Disputes (ICSID), the United Nations Commission on International Trade Law (UNCITRAL), the International Chamber of Commerce (ICC), the London Court of International Arbitration (LCIA), the Mexican Chamber of Commerce (CANACO), and the Japan Commercial Arbitration Association (JCAA).  Ms. Brown de Vejar also acts as an arbitrator in commercial matters, with particular experience arbitrating matters under the ICDR/AAA Construction Industry Arbitration Rules.

Notable for her experience in disputes across a wide range of sectors, including aeronautical, construction and engineering, financial services, mining and resources, oil and gas, tax, telecommunications and water treatment, Ms. Brown de Vejar regularly deals with cases involving complex issues of civil and mechanical engineering, allegations of delay and disruption, and defective design and construction works.  She is a member of the Board of Directors of the Centre of Arbitration for the Construction Industry (CAIC) in Mexico, and Vice President of ANZMEX, the Australia, New Zealand, Mexico Business Council.

Widely recognized for her experience handling complex, high profile disputes, Ms. Brown de Vejar has been cited by leading legal publications including Chambers and Partners and Legal 500.  In the 2017 edition of Legal 500 Latin America, sources praise her as “one of the best in investment arbitration.”  In addition, she has been named one of the top female lawyers engaged in Latin America in 2017 and 2018 by Latinvex.

Since 2008, Ms. Brown de Vejar has been appointed by the Australian Attorney General’s Department to represent Australia at the meetings of the United Nations Commission on International Trade Law (UNCITRAL) Working Group II (Arbitration and Conciliation).  In this role, she participated in the working group’s 2010 and 2013 revisions to the UNCITRAL Arbitration Rules, the development of the UNCITRAL Rules on Transparency in treaty-based investor-State arbitration, and the negotiation of the Mauritius Convention on Transparency.  She is widely considered an expert on arbitrations conducted under the UNCITRAL Arbitration Rules.

In April 2016, Ms. Brown de Vejar was appointed to the Executive Committee of Young Arbitral Women Practitioners (YAWP), the under-40 branch of ArbitralWomen.  From 2014 to 2016, she was co-Chair of Young ICCA, a not-for-profit organization which aims to open the doors of international arbitration to young practitioners from all corners of the globe, and operates under the auspices of the International Council for Commercial Arbitration (ICCA).  In addition to regularly publishing and speaking on international arbitration topics, she has guest lectured on international dispute resolution at the Center for Research and Teaching in Economics (CIDE), Mexico City, and the Tecnológico de Monterrey, in the State of Mexico.
