Mr. Garcia will be a panelist at the New York State Judicial Institute’s Judicial Seminar on June 27, 2008. His session is entitled, “Cross-Racial Identification: The utilization of DNA testing and evidence has led to over 200 exonerations nationwide,” and will focus on cross-racial identifications as one of the reasons for wrongful conviction. The panel will also examine the nearly 30 years of research on the topic and what the research suggests about ‘own race’ identification as compared to ‘cross-race’ identification.

The Association of Media & Entertainment Counsel, an association of U.S. media and entertainment attorneys, is focusing its 2008 educational panels on the international arena, specifically on analysis of investment in and content distribution to the television industries of the ‘BRIC’ emerging markets (Brazil, Russia, India & China). In this initiative, Curtis and other selected law firms have prepared White Papers analyzing the television industry in each of these markets, and panels devoted to a comparison of the television industries in the BRIC markets will be held in Los Angeles and New York.
The Brazil White Paper, entitled “Zapping In: The Brazilian Television Experience”, was co-authored by Andrew H. Seiden with partners of the Brazilian firm Araújo y Policastro Advogados. Eduardo A. Cukier wrote a Tax Considerations Appendix for the Brazil White Paper.
Mr. Cukier will participate on panel discussions entitled “The Television Business in the Emerging Markets: Brazil, Russia, India & China.” The first panel will be held on June 17, 2008 at 5:00 p.m. at the UCLA Anderson School of Management in Los Angeles, California as the opening presentation of the UCLA Entertainment and Media Executive Program. The second panel will take place in New York City on July 9, 2008 at the CIBC Auditorium of PricewaterhouseCoopers. Mr. Cukier will discuss tax considerations in investing in a Brazilian company or licensing content to Brazilian television. Immediately following each panel, Mr. Cukier and Mr. Seiden will meet with companies interested in the Brazilian television market.
Copies of the BRIC White Papers will be distributed on a complimentary basis at each panel and will be available for purchase from the AMEC.

Bryan Elwood, Counsel in the Washington DC Office, took part as a speaker in the “The Power of Partners: Moroccan American Bridges”, a seminar organized by the Moroccan American Circle and the Association of Moroccan Professionals in America. The two day event sponsored by Citigroup, CMS Energy, Fedex and other major firms, addressed issues related to the recently enacted U.S.-Morocco Free Trade Agreement.
In the panel, together with Mr. Elwood, were Morocco’s Minister of Agriculture, the President of AMCHAM in Morocco, the Economic Counselor of the Moroccan Embassy in Washington DC and Mehdi Bennani, a former associate at Curtis, now Partner of Bennani & Associates in Morocco. Curtis Attorneys Active in the 2003 Fall Meeting in Amsterdam of the International Law and Practice Section of the New York State Bar Association

The fall meeting of the International Law and Practice Section of the New York State Bar Association was hosted this year in Amsterdam. The meeting was held from October 22-26, 2003 at the historic Amstel Intercontinental Hotel, located directly along the Amstel river. The meeting was chaired by Marco A. Blanco, a partner in the Firm’s Tax department, and co-sponsored by the International Bar Association and the Union Internationale des Avocats. As in previous years, it attracted a wide variety of practitioners from many countries, including professors, judges, lawyers and government officials.
Other attorneys of the Firm who participated in the Section’s fall meeting included Jeffrey I. Zuckerman, a partner in the Firm’s Litigation department, who spoke in the “Extraterritorial and Transnational Enforcement of Antitrust Laws” program; Joseph D. Pizzurro, a partner in Curtis’ Litigation department, who spoke in the “Developments in the Exercise of International and Extraterritorial Jurisdiction by U.S. Courts; Are U.S. Courts Becoming International Courts of Claim?” program; and Andrew Otis, an associate in the Firm’s Environmental practice group, who spoke in the “Legal Preparation for the World Wide Trade of Carbondioxide Emission Rights in Europe and the United States” program.
Linda Galler to Speak at the Annual Capital University Law School Tax Institute

Linda Galler, an associate in the Firm’s Tax department and Professor of Law at Hofstra University School of Law, will speak at the first annual Capital University Law School Tax Institute entitled “Tax Planning: What Can Tax Practitioners Do Today” on October 10, 2003. The conference, which will include Tax Attorneys, Tax Accountants, Financial Planners and Analysts, will cover such topics as:
- Tax Planning, Preparation, and Privilege
- Schemes, Shelters, and Abusive Transactions
- Ethical Issues on the Cutting Edge
- Executive Tax Planning
- Tax Legislation: What’s on the Horizon
Ms. Galler’s lecture, entitled “Tax Planning, Preparation and Privilege,” will discuss such relevant issues as:
- Drawing a line between tax planning and return preparation
for purposes of the attorney-client and section 7525 privileges
- Implications of United States v. KPMG
- Collateral consequences of litigation in the privilege area, e.g., preparer privilege

Linda Galler Speaks at the Association of the Bar of the City of New York’s Personal Income Taxation Committee Meeting

Linda Galler, an associate in the Firm’s Tax department and Professor of Law at Hofstra University School of Law, spoke at the Association of the Bar of the City of New York’s Personal Income Taxation Committee Meeting on October 7, 2003, discussing “Recent Changes to Circular 230: Standards Governing Tax Practitioners.” Ms. Galler is a frequent author and speaker on tax ethics and other related issues.
Lynn P. Harrison 3rd to Speak at “Secured Claims & Structured Financial Products in Bankruptcy Cases” Seminar September 24-25, 2003
Lynn P. Harrison 3rd, partner in the Firm’s Bankruptcy & Creditors’ Rights Department, will speak at the “Secured Claims & Structured Financial Products in Bankruptcy Cases” seminar to take place on September 24 - 25, 2003. The program deals with how to most effectively represent clients in bankruptcy cases involving secured claims and structured financial products. The program will examine major legal issues, significant new cases and pending legislation. Topics to be discussed are:
