Antonia Birt is a partner in the International Arbitration group. She represents clients at every stage of complex and high-value commercial and construction disputes.
Ms. Birt has a broad range of experience from settlement negotiation, mediation and other alternative dispute resolution methods, to formal dispute resolution proceedings and enforcements. She represents state, domestic and multinational clients in a variety of industry sectors including oil and gas, energy, real estate, and distribution.
Ms. Birt has acted on arbitrations under the rules of the International Chamber of Commerce (ICC), London Court of International Arbitration (LCIA), Dubai International Financial Centre and the London Court of International Arbitration (DIFC-LCIA), Dubai International Arbitration Centre (DIAC) and the United Nations Commission on International Trade Law (UNCITRAL), seated in the major arbitral centers as well as various GCC jurisdictions. She has acted under numerous governing laws, including those of the UAE, Bahrain, Kuwait, and the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. Ms. Birt also acts as arbitrator in commercial disputes.
Ms. Birt has experience advising on the typically complex issues which arise on major construction and engineering projects. She has advised clients involved in various major projects, including oil and gas, energy, power and water, infrastructure as well as high-rise developments. Ms. Birt also advises on expert determination proceedings and other forms of resolving construction and engineering disputes prior to commencing formal dispute resolution proceedings.
Ms. Birt has advised clients under investigation by the World Bank, the UK Serious Fraud Office, and various EU competition authorities. She has represented clients before the regulatory bodies, led internal investigations, led compliance training and advised clients with respect to internal compliance procedures.
Ms. Birt has a decade's worth of experience in the Middle East, and is very active in the dispute resolution community, partaking in seminars and publications. She has presented at a range of conferences such as the GAR Live in Abu Dhabi, GAR Interactive in Dubai, the International Centre for Dispute Resolution Young & International Conference (ICDR Y&I), the International Chamber of Commerce Young Arbitrators Forum Conference (ICC YAF), the Young Members Chartered Institute of Arbitrators Conference (CIArb), among others. Ms. Birt is on the steering committees of the International Institute for Conflict Prevention and Resolution Young Attorneys in International Dispute Resolution program (CPR-Y-ADR) and the Campaign for Greener Arbitrations; co-chair for the MENA Sub-Committee of the Equal Representation in Arbitration Pledge, and member of the international advisory board of Pakistan’s Center for International Investment and Commercial Arbitration Young Arbitration Group (CIICA YAG). Since 2019, Ms. Birt also teaches an arbitration practicum course to LLM students at the Pantheon Sorbonne-Assas University Paris II in Dubai.
