May Semerdjian-Jansem is an associate in the international arbitration group. Her practice focuses on representing states and state-owned entities in public international law matters, complex investor-state arbitrations and international commercial arbitrations. Her experience also includes advising states and private entities on various issues of business & human rights.
Ms. Semerdjian-Jansem has worked on arbitrations conducted under the auspices of the International Centre for Settlement of Investment Disputes (ICSID), the United Nations Commission on International Trade Law (UNCITRAL) and the International Chamber of Commerce (ICC).
Ms. Semerdjian-Jansem possesses experience in a wide range of sectors, including oil and gas, mining and project development. She has been involved in enforcement and set-aside proceedings before ICSID ad hoc committees and French courts. She is currently representing and advising several sovereign clients from Africa, the Middle-East and the Pacific region.
She is also developing her expertise in addressing legal challenges within the artificial intelligence (AI) industry, with a particular focus on global regulatory issues. Her work centers on analyzing emerging frameworks and AI governance initiatives, and assessing their implications for businesses.
Ms. Semerdjian-Jansem frequently publishes articles in public international law reviews, including on international territorial disputes. She is also a lecturer in International Economic Law for the LLM of Assas International Law School.
Prior to joining Curtis, Ms. Semerdjian-Jansem acted as a legal advisor for a French law firm in criminal law and human rights, on proceedings before the Highest Courts and the European Court of Human Rights, and completed several internships in international law firms in London and Paris.
