Mr. English has over 17 years post-qualification tax experience with extensive advisory experience in U.K. corporate tax, international tax, supply chain restructuring, and tax disputes. His experience has been gained across diverse industries – such as oil and gas, banking and finance, technology, energy, media, entertainment, and start-ups – and includes providing substantive international tax advice in relation to over 45 countries across 6 continents.
Mr. English advises on corporate tax and investment tax issues, as well as on VAT, in a broad variety of domestic and cross-border matters in transactions, advisory, and funds – with clients including corporates, investment funds, governments, state entities, family offices, and high net worth individuals. This typically involves advice on the taxation of mergers and acquisitions, restructures, corporate and structured finance, private equity, real estate, and on international tax matters such as treaty relief, withholding taxes, and permanent establishment.
Prior to joining Curtis, Mr. English’s tax career includes in-house experience at a top 5 FSTE 100 public company as one of the key lawyers collectively leading a £62 billion cross-border restructure, as well as wide-ranging international corporate tax advisory work at several Big Four accounting firms where he advised U.K., U.S., and Japanese multinationals on their U.K. and European activities. His career further incorporates almost 5 years at HM Revenue & Customs in the Solicitor’s Office leading on complex high value advisory, investigation, and litigation matters as the senior lawyer in charge. Here his matters covered taxes totaling over £1.8 billion, and involved time in the High Risk Corporates Programme and as one of the two senior lawyers chosen to advise the GAAR Advisory Panel. Mr. English has also worked at another U.S. law firm providing corporate tax advice, and routine transaction support, in relation to acquisitions / disposals and structured finance for private equity, public companies, and sovereign wealth funds.
