Turkmenistan Launches First Communications Satellite

Ashgabat, Turkmenistan, May 5, 2015 – The government of Turkmenistan has launched its first communications satellite into orbit. The satellite lifted off on April 27 from Cape Canaveral Air Force Station in Florida on an unmanned SpaceX rocket. The Spacebus 4000 telecommunications satellite, TurkmenÄlem52E/MonacoSat, was built by Thales Alenia Space, a joint venture of Thales SA and Finmeccanica SpA, on behalf of the Turkmenistan Ministry of Communications. Turkmenistan's first telecommunications spacecraft, will give the country its first national satellite communications system and relay television broadcasts and other services to more than 1.2 billion people in Central Asia, Europe, the Middle East, and North Africa. It is designed to last at least 15 years.
