Curtis Partner Timothy Barnes Chosen to Become United States Bankruptcy Judge

New York, February 3, 2012 - Timothy A. Barnes, partner at Curtis, Mallet-Prevost, Colt & Mosle LLP, has been appointed to a 14-year term as United States Bankruptcy Judge for the United States District Court for the Northern District of Illinois. He will take office in Chicago on May 16, 2012.

Mr. Barnes, who was appointed by Chief Judge Frank H. Easterbrook of the United States Court of Appeals for the Seventh Circuit, will be one of the first new members of the court in nine years.  He will fill the vacancy on the bench that will be created when United States Bankruptcy Judge Susan Pierson Sonderby retires.

"We are very proud that Tim Barnes has been given the rare honor of being selected to serve as a bankruptcy judge," said Steven J. Reisman, co-chair of Curtis' Restructuring and Insolvency group.  "Tim played a major role in the success of our globally-acclaimed practice.  We will miss him but, at the same time, we know he will continue to make an important contribution to helping parties to matters involving financial distress resolve their situations."

"It had to be something very special for me to leave Curtis but this is a wonderful opportunity to do what I love in a way I love in a place that I love," said Mr. Barnes, who will be returning to Chicago.  "I will always cherish my years at Curtis, particularly the experience of working alongside my fellow lawyers in the Restructuring practice."

Mr. Barnes joined Curtis as a partner in 2007.  He practices out of the firm's New York and London offices, specializing in bankruptcy and debt restructuring, representing debtors, lenders, creditors, investors and other parties of interest in the world's largest and most complex restructuring matters.  He worked on numerous cross-border and international insolvency matters.

Mr. Barnes was named a Fellow of INSOL International in 2011.  He received this distinction upon graduating (with honors) from INSOL International's Global Insolvency Practice Course, an LL.M.-level program that teaches participants the underlying principles, statutes, regulatory frameworks and insolvency restructuring regimes in countries around the globe.

He previously served as a law clerk to Chief United States Bankruptcy Judge William A. Clark of the Southern District of Ohio and to Judge Joseph Clark of the Fairfield County Court of Common Pleas.

Mr. Barnes earned his law and master's degrees at Ohio State University after receiving his undergraduate degree at Miami University.   He has also taught bankruptcy law at DePaul and the University of Dayton School of Law.
