Partners Miriam Harwood and David Hesse speak at 6th Investment Treaty Arbitration Conference in Prague
Speakers: Miriam K. Harwood

New York-based partner Miriam Harwood and London-based partner David Hesse spoke at the 6th Investment Treaty Arbitration Conference, organized by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Czech Republic, held at the Czernin Palace in Prague on October 14, 2016.

This annual, multi-day conference is designed to bring together government representatives from around the world, to share knowledge and experiences regarding investment treaty arbitrations.  Approximately 200 delegates attended, including leading arbitration practitioners and government representatives from 26 countries.   A keynote address was presented by Emmanuel Gallard of Shearman & Sterling, Paris.

Ms. Harwood participated on a panel entitled “Role & effects of local law and court decisions,” moderated by Bart Legum of Dentons, with co-panelists Luka Misetic of Squire Patton Boggs and Erica Stein of Dechert.  Her presentation focused on the role of national law in assessing claims of host state violations of obligations to foreign investors under international investment treaties.

Mr. Hesse moderated the panel on “Non-pecuniary remedies,” which featured panelists Bernd Ehle of LALIVE, Deborah Ruff of Norton Rose Fulbright, Kabbir Duggal of Baker & McKenzie, and Wolf von Kumberg of ArbDB Chambers.  The panel addressed the availability of various types of interim measures against States in international arbitrations.
