Mr. Vimal Tilakapala is a senior tax lawyer with over thirty years of experience. He spent 25 years at a UK “magic circle” law firm, where he was a partner and head of UK tax and continued as a consultant until joining Curtis. He maintains an active private tax practice alongside his judicial career.

Mr. Tilakapala advises on both domestic and international tax and has experience across corporate and finance transactions of all kinds and in relation to tax disputes.

He has a particular interest in finance related tax including structured financing, regulatory capital, securitization and the taxation of financial instruments.

His client base has included corporations, financial institutions, funds (including pension funds) and sovereign entities.

Mr. Tilakapala has been widely recognized as a leader in the field of taxation by Chambers UK, Legal 500 UK, Who’s Who Legal and the International Tax Review.

Mr Tilakapala was appointed in 2022 to sit as a fee paid judge in the Upper Tribunal (Tax & Chancery) Chamber which hears tax appeals and financial services cases, and to sit in the First Tier Tax Tribunal which hears tax cases.

He is also a CEDR accredited mediator.

Transactional Tax

Mr. Tilakapala advises on a broad range of corporate transactions including business establishment, mergers and acquisitions, disposals and restructuring and investing in various UK asset classes.

He also advises on a wide range of finance transaction including all forms of bilateral or syndicated debt financing, structured financing, all aspects of debt and equity capital markets, stock lending and repurchase transactions and derivatives generally.

Tax Controversy

Mr. Tilakapala advises clients on tax related disputes and investigations covering both domestic and international treaty based matters.
