Marat Umerov Speaks at the Washington Arbitration Week

On December 6, 2024, counsel Marat Umerov spoke at this year’s Washington Arbitration Week, on a panel focused on State Defense in Investment Arbitration. The panel explored various defense models to manage the defense, including outsourcing to external counsel, hybrid models that combine external expertise with in-house legal teams, as well as a model of defense led entirely by the State’s internal counsel, each model presenting unique dynamics that influence a state’s ability to protect its interests while navigating complex legal and policy landscapes. Other panelists included David M. Bigge, Chief of Investment Arbitration at the U.S. Department of State, Vanessa Rivas Plata, President of the Special Commission representing the Peruvian State in International Investment Disputes, and Giovanny Vega, former Director of International Legal Defense and Chief of Investment Arbitration Group at the Colombian National Legal Defense Agency.
