Kerem Alev

Based in Curtis’ Muscat office, he leads a significant portfolio of disputes for Omani and Oman-based clients, including listed companies and major commercial enterprises, as well as international clients with projects and commercial interests in Oman. He also advises on disputes arising elsewhere in the GCC.

Arbitration and Disputes Practice

Mr Alev regularly leads domestic and international arbitrations for contractors, employers, project owners, consultants, and other participants in major construction, infrastructure, energy, and industrial projects.

His experience spans civil and infrastructure works; oil & gas, oilfield and drilling services; refineries, terminals and processing facilities; cement, manufacturing and other heavy industrial facilities; and the supply and installation of plant, equipment and construction materials. He also acts in wider commercial disputes arising from major projects, engineering and professional services, supply arrangements and long-term commercial relationships.

Mr Alev represents a broad range of Omani and international businesses, including listed and privately held companies, major contractors, drilling and oilfield services businesses, and industrial and manufacturing companies. His experience also includes acting for ministries, government bodies, state-owned enterprises and national oil companies.

He works closely with senior management, in-house legal teams, counsel, and experts to develop and implement dispute strategy, including contractual claims, referrals and submissions to engineers and other contractual decision-makers, settlement strategy, and the commencement and defence of arbitral proceedings.

Mr Alev has experience of arbitrations conducted under a range of institutional and ad hoc rules and seated in different jurisdictions. He is particularly familiar with ad hoc arbitration, including in Oman, as well as proceedings conducted under the ICC, UNCITRAL, DIAC and LCIA.

His practice is centred on Oman and Oman-related disputes, but frequently involves international parties, counsel, experts, tribunals, governing laws and arbitral seats. He also advises Omani and international clients on disputes arising elsewhere in the GCC.

English and Omani Law Experience

Mr Alev qualified as a Solicitor of England & Wales in 2013 and was subsequently called to the Bar of England & Wales in 2019. He combines English law expertise with substantial experience of disputes governed by Omani law and works with local and international co-counsel where matters involve other systems of law.

Before relocating to Oman, Mr Alev spent over a decade practising dispute resolution and commercial law in England. He appeared regularly as an advocate in hearings and trials. He was involved in proceedings before the High Court and its specialist jurisdictions, as well as matters before the Court of Appeal and Supreme Court.

He also acted as outside counsel to an international AIM-listed group, advising its board and senior management across a broad range of legal and commercial matters involving businesses operating across several sectors and jurisdictions.

Mr Alev was previously a partner at a London law firm. Having practised as both a solicitor and a barrister, he brings experience across the full lifecycle of a dispute, from evidence and case preparation through to strategy, pleadings and advocacy. His combined commercial, litigation and arbitration background informs a practical approach to dispute strategy, with particular emphasis on evidence, commercial objectives and the issues likely to matter to the ultimate decision-maker.
