Maria Ongoren represents sovereign states and state-owned entities in complex multi-jurisdictional investor-state arbitration cases across a wide range of sectors including construction, natural resources, banking and telecommunication under the rules of the International Centre for Settlement of Investment Disputes (ICSID), and the United Nations Commission on International Trade Law (UNCITRAL).

Ms. Ongoren represents state-owned entities and private companies in commercial arbitration cases arising out of gas supply contracts, construction contracts and distribution agreements under the rules of the International Chamber of Commerce (ICC), Dubai International Financial Centre and the London Court of International Arbitration (DIFC-LCIA), Dubai International Arbitration Centre (DIAC).

Among other recent high-profile disputes, she successfully represented Turkmen state-owned gas company in a multi-billion arbitration case against Iranian state-owned gas company and the dismissal of the majority of counterclaims. Ms. Ongoren was also in the Curtis team obtaining a full dismissal of the claims in Içkale v. Turkmenistan, and securing a costs award in the State Client’s favour. She also assisted in representing sovereign interests in a number of Kazakhstan-related matters.

Prior to joining Curtis, Ms. Ongoren provided legal consultations on the laws and regulations of the Russian Federation to Turkish corporate clients and prepared reports on issues relating to the legislation in the CIS States. She has been awarded scholarships by the Rhône-Alpes Region of France (2007-2008) and the European Commission of the European Union (2006).
