Curtis attorneys spent a busy and productive week in Uzbekistan, participating in a number of events on Investment Funds, Islamic compliant private fund formation and issuance of Islamic public instruments, venture capital and FinTech investment structures, sanctions regulation and Arbitration. The Curtis Team consisted of Mr Carl Ruggiero, Mr Shaun Reader, Mr Mikhail Bychikhin, Mr Michael McMillan, Mr Yuri Presniakov, Mr Arslan Makharamov and Mr Ibrat Hikmatov.
On 18th June, Mr Carl Ruggiero represented Curtis at the Foreign Investors Council plenary session with the President of Uzbekistan. Subsequently, Mr. Ruggiero was asked to co-chair the Council’s committee on corporate governance and join the Council’s committee on Alternate Investment Management.
On the same day, Mr Shaun Reader gave a very well received presentation as part of a panel on Alternative Investment Funds at the Tashkent International Investment Forum. Subsequently, Mr. Reader was interviewed by the television press.
On the same day, Mr Mikhail Bychikhin spoke at English Law Day’s “Case Study Workshop: Cross-Border Disputes and Sanctions Issues”. This formed part of Uzbekistan Arbitration Week.
The Curtis Team also spent a significant amount of time at the Central Bank discussing the Country’s planned initiatives and investments in the Fintech industry.
At the Ministry of Investments, Industry and Trade of Uzbekistan, Mr. Shaun Reader and Mr. Carl Ruggiero presented two days of seminars on developing the legal framework for alternative investment funds. Representatives of the Ministry of Justice, the Ministry of Economy and Finance, the Ministry of Digital Technologies, the Central Bank, the Fund for Reconstruction and Development, National Agency for Perspective Projects and other institutions participated. Mr. Yuri Presniakov presented a session on the structuring of venture capital transactions in developing nations such as Uzbekistan. Mr Michael McMillan zoomed in from the United States to present on the structuring and marketing of Islamic compliant private funds and the issuance of Islamic public instruments.
