Curtis has been recognized in the Legal 500 United Kingdom 2023 edition across several practices, including Public International Law, Oil and Gas, Private Funds and International Arbitration.
Public International Law
The firm is recognized for routinely representing sovereign nations in investor-state arbitrations. The experience of PIL leader Charles Buderi covers both international arbitration claims involving states, and the representation of governments in relation to sovereignty disputes, and treaty and diplomatic matters; and Luciana Ricart frequently advises states and state-owned entities.
Oil & Gas
Curtis is praised for advising governments, state-owned companies and regulators on corporate M&A, project development and restructuring matters. Marc Hammerson, Ryan Hansen and Tony Edwards head the team.
The team is very experienced in construction and oil and gas contracts; they can unite experts from several countries to deliver the most complete and sharp legal opinion with multicultural views’.
‘They often show familiarity with every aspect of our agreements and negotiations from the very first contact, allowing the quick delivery of the analysis’.
Private Funds
Curtis is described as “a close-knit team with years of experience”, which stands out for the global nature of its funds practice, which encompasses advising fund managers and investors from the US, the Middle East and across Europe. The London-based practice assists on the structuring, formation and marketing of funds, working with its offices around the world to provide cross-jurisdictional advice. The team is jointly led by Thomas Laurer, an ‘incredibly diligent’ US-qualified lawyer who was previously a part of the firm’s New York funds group; Ryan Hansen, who provides advice on investments, corporate governance and regulations; and Daniel Lewin, a tax specialist who joined the firm in March 2022 from MJ Hudson.
“I would say its a more bespoke personalised service where you do not feel like another horse in the stable.”
“Ryan Hansen has been exceptional in servicing our firm. He is prompt in his response, always on a timely basis, & works with a sense of urgency which we appreciate very much.”
“Thomas Laurer’s knowledge of both the US, UK and European legal systems along with having the connections with the right people who can answer our specific needs from a tax perspective has been really helpful with a founding team with multiple citizenships.”
International Arbitration
Curtis’ London team acts in complex, cross-border commercial arbitrations across the telecoms, construction, mining, aviation, pharmaceuticals and energy sectors. London and Dubai-based Charles Buderi is experienced in disputes concerning the petroleum industry, international commercial transactions, and infrastructure development; and Mark Handley specialises in cross-border arbitrations.
