Curtis Attorneys Participate in Meetings of the Council under the President of the Republic of Uzbekistan and Conduct Seminars to the Ministry of Justice

Meetings of the Foreign Investors Council under the President of the Republic of Uzbekistan

From 18-20 May, Curtis attorneys participated in meetings of the Foreign Investors Council under the President of the Republic of Uzbekistan (the “Council”).

On 18 May, the high-level meeting of the Council took place. Arslan Makharamov of Curtis Tashkent participated in the interim session of the Foreign Investors Council dedicated to discussing investors’ proposals for further developing the investment climate in Uzbekistan. The event featured the Deputy Prime Minister of the Republic of Uzbekistan, as well as deputy ministers and senior representatives of, inter alia, the Ministry of Justice, the Ministry of Mining Industry and Geology, the Ministry of Investment, Industry and Trade, the Ministry of Economy and Finance, the Central Bank, the Tax Committee. It also brought together the leadership of key members of the Council in Uzbekistan, including EBRD, ADB, ACWA Power, Masdar, Uzum, TBC Bank, EDF, Voltalia and others.

On 20 May, a meeting of the Council took place relating to the establishment of the Tashkent International Financial Centre (“TIFC”):

  • Curtis Counsel Mikhail Bychikhin presented on the proposed TIFC Courts and the issues to consider in the draft of the Constitutional Law (taking into account the recent developments and case law in the UAE).
  • Curtis Counsel Yuri Presniakov spoke on the regulatory sandboxes and their implementation in TIFC.

Seminars to the Ministry of Justice

On 18 May, Counsels Mikhail Bychikhin and Maria Ongoren delivered seminars upon the invitation of the Ministry of Justice.

  • Mikhail Bychikhin presented on sanctions compliance issues.
  • Maria Ongoren focused on the practical aspects of arbitration proceedings.
  • The seminar was attended by representatives from key state bodies and companies, including the Ministry of Justice, Ministry of Transport, Ministry of Economy and Finance, Central Bank, Uzbekneftegas, Uztransgas, Uzbekinvest, Asakabank, Promstroybank, Thermal Electrical Station, and Almalyk Mining and Metallurgical Complex JSC.

In addition, on 14 and 21 May, Counsels Yuri Presniakov and Marc Hammerson held sessions for the students of the Tashkent State University of Law in relation to the principles of English law and Uzbekistan law.
