Curtis Secures Repeat Victory for Kazakhstan Committee for Roads in ICC Arbitration

In an ICC arbitration arising from disputes concerning a road construction project, Curtis successfully defended the Kazakhstan Committee for Roads against nearly US$50 million in claims, prevailed on the Committee’s counterclaim for US$2.5 million, and secured reimbursement of all the Committee’s legal and arbitration expenses (over US$2.77 million). This is the fifth consecutive arbitration win Curtis has secured for the Committee for Roads.

In May 2020, a joint venture consisting of the companies Todini Costruzioni Generali S.p.A., WeBuild S.p.A., and Kazakhdorstroy LLP brought the arbitration asserting claims based on alleged project delays and various other events. The Committee denied the claims in full and asserted a counterclaim seeking recovery of amounts overpaid in prolongation costs during the project. On April 14, 2025, the Tribunal issued the Final Award in favor of the Committee.

The team of Curtis lawyers securing this comprehensive win comprises lead partner Hermann Ferré, partner Serena Boscia Montalbano, counsel Robert Groot, and counsel Bibigul Nugumova.
