Article 26 Jun. 2024
Partner John Balouziyeh published an article in the Oxford Journal of International Criminal Justice entitled “The Role of Civil Society in Promoting Corporate Accountability for International Crimes.” The article was co-authored with Amb. Stephen J. Rapp, former U.S. Ambassador-at-Large for Global Criminal Justice and Chief of Prosecutions at the International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda.
In preparing the article, Mr. Balouziyeh and Amb. Rapp canvased over 140 international and domestic cases brought against corporate actors for alleged liability for international crimes. Relying on interviews of prosecutorial authorities and civil society actors, the authors offer a comparative overview of corporate liability cases brought in Europe and North America against corporate actors for complicity in war crimes, crimes against humanity and genocide. The article analyzes both civil and criminal cases brought in fora exercising universal jurisdiction for international crimes and those prosecuting actors for violations of international sanctions legislation and terrorist financing laws.
