Curtis Attorneys Contribute to Chambers 2025 International Trade Global Practice Guide

Partner Elena Klonitskaya, counsel Mikhail Bychikhin and associates Ana Amador and Sofia Forestiere have written an article for the Chambers and Partners International Trade Global Practice Guide 2025 in their chapter, “Trends and Developments: Belgium.”

Their chapter addresses how the EU's trade policy has evolved significantly in recent years, now encompassing national security, climate change, human rights, and high social standards alongside traditional goals like market openness. Geopolitical instability and challenges like supply chain resilience and the European Green Deal have further shaped EU trade practices, with increasing use of protectionist measures, trade defense, and sustainability regulations. Amid rising tensions with major trade partners like the US and China, the EU is shifting towards regional supply chains and tightening regulations on climate, forced labor, and human rights. This transformation is also reflected in growing use of trade agreements, export controls, and sanctions to ensure economic and security interests, while balancing its goals of sustainability and fair trade.
