Curtis International Arbitration Lawyers Lead International Law Institute Seminars in Washington, D.C.

Five members of Curtis' International Arbitration Group will participate in a two-week program organized by the International Law Institute (ILI) in Washington, D.C., leading seminars on investor-state arbitrations for a group of government officials from Kenya, Nigeria, Uganda, Saudi Arabia, New Zealand, Sri Lanka, Singapore, the OPEC Fund for International Development, and the Philippines (with a delegation of 30 lawyers from the Solicitor General's office). The courses were designed to address issues arising from the increasing number of arbitrations brought by foreign investors against host States pursuant to bilateral investment treaties. The program will take place in Washington, D.C. during the first two weeks of December.

Claudia Frutos-Peterson (counsel, Washington, D.C.) and Maria Priezzheva (associate, Washington, D.C.) will give a presentation on 'Governing Law, Umbrella Clauses, and Breach of Treaty versus Breach of Contract.'

Borzu Sabahi (associate, Washington, D.C.) and Diora Ziyaeva (associate, New York) will discuss 'Damages and Other Remedies in International Investment Arbitration — Compensation, Restitution, Moral Damages, Interest, Costs.'

ILI is a non-profit organization with a mission to 'foster prosperity through the rule of law,' which organizes numerous courses on international investment law and arbitration as well as other subjects, such as public procurement and privatization. Borzu Sabahi is a co-director of the ILI's International Law Center, and is responsible for coordinating the program.
